There are probably no creatures more universally loved than penguins; no creatures more instantly recognizable. From the plains of Arkansas to the headwaters of the Zambesi, people the world-over know penguins even though the vast majority have never seen a penguin and probably never will. But what do we really know about this animal that we have taken into our hearts if not our heads?

Penguins are in danger of becoming caricatures of themselves. The cartoonists have commandeered them as their icons for conformity and uniformity, for funny and awkward, for snow and ice. They walk like us. They swim like fish. They seem cute and cuddly. The reality, however, is that real penguins are not like that at all. They are surprisingly varied, remarkably agile, and they can be found living in deserts in some of the hottest climates of the world. Real penguins can be aggressive and their coats are stiff, unlike the fluffy coverings of toy penguins. The African penguin is only found on the Southern African coastline. Nowhere else in the world. Its breeding range extends from Hallam’s Bird Island, off central Namibia, to Bird Island in Algoa Bay. Non-breeding birds disperse from Southern Angola to Kwazulu-Natal, and have even been sighted as far as Mozambique. There are 27 extant breeding colonies, eight islands and one mainland site along the coast of southern Namibia, 10 islands and two mainland sites along the coast of the Western Cape Province (South Africa), and six islands in Algoa Bay (Eastern Cape Province, South Africa). The rest of the will contained some bouquets and brickbats for the officers of Astrolabe and Zélée, and a couple of quite startling special clauses: "Para 5 - There remains in my store about three hundred and fifty litres of wine and twenty-five litres of arrack; all of it is to be distributed in double rations to the crewmen (only) of Astrolabe on the day of the week and the hour that correspond to me drawing my last breath, for as long as the supply lasts."

Besonders bei Kälte und starkem Wind rücken Pinguine nah zusammen. Überlegt, welcher Vorteil mit diesem Verhalten verbunden ist! In folgendem Modellexperiment sollt ihr eure Vermutung überprüfen! Ihr braucht dafür: 10 Eprouvetten, 2 Thermometer, warmes Wasser, Eprouvettenständer. Durchführung: Jedes Reagenzglas soll einen Pinguin darstellen. Füllt jedes Reagenzglas mit warmem Wasser (40-50 °C). Stellt ein Reagenzglas allein in einen Eprouvettenständer. Bindet nun die restlichen neun Eprouvetten mit einem Gummiband zusammen. Messt nun im Abstand von 5 Minuten die Wassertemperatur in dem einzelnen Reagenzglas und in den zusammengebundenen Reagenzgläsern und zwar - in einem aus der Mitte und - in einem radständigem. Am Nachmittag schlafen Pinguine besonders fest, fand Gerard Dewasmes von der University of Picardy in der Antarktis heraus. Zu unterschiedlichen Tageszeiten tippte er schlafenden Pinguinen einmal in der Minute auf die Schulter. Am Morgen erwachten die Tiere nach fünf Minuten, am Nachmittag dagegen tippte Dewasmes seinen Pinguinen etwa neunmal auf die Schulter, bis diese aufwachten.

It is perfectly normal for gentoos and macaronis to rest or sleep on their bellies. They also sleep while standing, sometimes with their beak tucked under their wing which helps regulate heat loss. Another interesting way I have seen them sleep is when they roll onto the back part of their foot bringing their toes off the ground. This helps regulate heat loss by keeping their toes off an icy or cold surface. Late in the afternoon after their last feeding of the day they tend to start preening. With full bellies, they go into a restful mode.
