Penguins are said to populate only a very limited part of our planet. If you look out for penguins, however, you will start to discover them in the most common places. In the average European city. In your daily life. In your household. Everywhere.

Penguin Origin | Pinguinentstehung

Charles Robert Darwin (1809–1882), "Origin of Species", 10. On the Sudden Appearance of Whole Groups of Allied Species:

I may here recall a remark formerly made, namely, that it might require a long succession of ages to adapt an organism to some new and peculiar line of life, for instance, to fly through the air; and consequently that the transitional forms would often long remain confined to some one region; but that, when this adaptation had once been effected, and a few species had thus acquired a great advantage over other organisms, a comparatively short time would be necessary to produce many divergent forms, which would spread rapidly and widely, throughout the world. Professor Pictet, in his excellent review of this work, in commenting on early transitional forms, and taking birds as an illustration, cannot see how the successive modifications of the anterior limbs of a supposed prototype could possibly have been of any advantage. But look at the penguins of the Southern Ocean; have not these birds their front limbs in this precise intermediate state of “neither true arms nor true wings”? Yet these birds hold their place victoriously in the battle for life; for they exist in infinite numbers and of many kinds.

There has been a significant amount of penguin research completed over the years. It has been done in order to further understand these amazing birds. The research has also helped to identify where they live as well as to place them into certain categories. From such research we know where penguins live, their reproduction habits, certain behaviors that they exhibit, and what is a threat to them. penguins-world.com

Penguin Defense | Pinguinverteidigung

Pinguinkompanie | Penguin Troops

Penguins Flippers as a Defensive Weapon - The flippers of the penguin are hard and rigid. These are used as weapons to defend themselves from their predators. The penguin flippers are used as a weapon in penguin fights also. The penguins are aggressive birds when they guard their nests. They use their flippers to hit the predator. They hit the predator rapidly with their flippers from both sides to defend themselves. The strikes of the flippers are painful, which causes the predators to move back. Another defensive weapon of the penguins is their bill that is used to bite their enemies. buzzle.com/articles

Jahrgang, 1883.

Account of the different Species of the Birds called Pinguins by Thomas Pennant, Esquire, F.R.S., March 17, 1768:

Pinguins. The characters of this genus are very small wings and those covered with meer shafts. Four toes on each foot, three of which are webbed, the fourth loose and standing forward.

1. The Patagonian Pinguin. Size. The length of the stuffed skin, we measured, was four feet three inches; and the bulk of the body seemed superior to that of a swan.

Pinguingewicht | Penguin Weight

A Penguin's second layer of defence is a thick layer of blubber immediately beneath the skin. Blubber is basically fatty oils and is a bad conductor of heat as well as a valuable store of energy. During the breeding season some of the more southerly Penguins may be as much as 32% blubber by weight. earthlife.net

Pinguine als Haustiere | Penguin Pets

Kann man Pinguine als Haustier halten? - Nein.

Can I keep a penguin as a pet? - Over the years we have often been asked about the possibility of keeping penguins as pets. We are no experts, but we have talked to several. They all are completely against the idea.

First off, all species of penguin are protected so that you could only (legally) get a penguin from a Zoo that had bred it.

Secondly, you would need a constant and reliable supply of fresh frozen fish as well as appropriate vitamin supplements, you would also need to know a vet who was familiar with penguins and the many diseases they are prone to when kept in captivity.

Thirdly, you would need to be able to feed the birds every day so you couldn't take any more vacations! You can't just put a penguin into kennels!

Fourthly, you would need to build a suitable enclosure to keep the bird - remember different species have very different environmental requirements (temperature, vegetation etc.). For example, there are no species of penguin that could live outside year round in say Chicago with its wide temperature variations. Plus all species of penguins require access to a large, deep and clean pool of water – preferably salt water.

Fifthly, penguins tend to live in large colonies - anything less than say 20 birds would not be sufficient. So you would need a very healthy income. Zoos here reckon it costs around 400 pounds (700 US$) per year just to keep a penguin in fish!

Finally, why would you want to keep penguins for yourself anyway? They are much better left in the wild or in well looked after breeding colonies in Zoos and Aquaria. Remember that nearly all species are endangered to some extent or another. We would strongly discourage anyone from trying to keep a penguin as a pet - except the cuddly toy variety! answers.google.com

More Penguin Persons | Pinguinmenschen

After all, there is more pathos than humor in his periodic visits to the penguins. Isolated, from childhood, by parental care, from the common friendships and associations of life, still further isolated in mature years by his own genius and early and lasting intellectual eminence, the wonder is that he was not more unhappy, rather than less. He had few friends, and those few, like Professor Norton, were intellectual companions as well, always ready and eager to debate with him the problems of Art and Life  which were forever vexing him. Their companionship must often have been a stimulant when he needed, perhaps, a narcotic. Their intercourse drove him continually in upon himself, where there was only seething unrest, when he needed so often to be taken completely out of himself, where there was peace.

And, in his hours of need, he turned to the Alps, and the penguins. But both were dumb things, after all, that could not quite meet his mood, could not quite satisfy that hunger which is in all of us for the common association of our kind, for the humble jest and cheery laugh of a smiling humanity. Neither of them was Bobbie, who adds personality to the penguin, and satisfies a double need.
