Penguins are said to populate only a very limited part of our planet. If you look out for penguins, however, you will start to discover them in the most common places. In the average European city. In your daily life. In your household. Everywhere.

I am sailing, I am sailing - Home again 'cross the sea - I am sailing stormy waters -To be near you, to be free - I am flying, I am flying - Like a bird, 'cross the sky - I am flying passing high clouds - To be with you, to be free

Can you hear me, Can you hear me - Through the dark nights, far away - I am dying, forever crying - To be with you, who can say - Can you hear me, Can you hear me - Through the dark nights, far away - I am dying, forever crying - To be with you, who can say  - We are sailing, we are sailing - Home again, 'cross the sea

We are sailing stormy waters - To be near you, to be free - Oh my Lord to be near you, to be free.  Rod Stewart

Keep on smiling | Das Lächeln bleibt

The chinstrap name comes from a thin line of black that extends from the back part of their black cap, under the chin and back up to their cap again. Looking straight on this almost appears as a smile, with their bill more like a nose. travelwild.com/antarctica-wildlife/chinstrap- penguins.aspxd

Pinguinpoesie | Penguin Poetry

Pinguine
(Joachim Ringelnatz, 1883-1934)

Auch die Pinguine ratschen, tratschen,
Klatschen, patschen, watscheln, latschen,
Tuscheln, kuscheln, tauchen, fauchen
Herdenweise, grüppchenweise
Mit Gevattern,
Pladdern, schnattern
Laut und leise.
Schnabel-Babelbabel-Schnack,
Seriöses, Skandalöses, Hiebe, Stiche.
Oben: Chemisette mit Frack.

Unten: lange, enge, hinderliche
Röcke. - Edelleute, Bürger, Pack,
Alte Weiber, Professoren.
Riesenvolk, in Schnee und Eis geboren.
Sie begrüßen herdenweise
Ersten Menschen, der sich leise
Ihnen naht. Weil sie sehr neugierig sind.
Und der erstgesehene Mensch ist neu.
Und Erfahrungslosigkeit starrt wie ein kleinstes Kind
Gierig staunend aus, jedoch nicht scheu.
Riesenvolk, in Schnee und Eis geboren,
Lebend in verschwiegener Bucht
In noch menschenfernem Lande.
Und das Riesenvolk, die ganze Bande
Ergreift die Flucht.

Egotrip - Small is Colourful | Schillerndes Ego

The blue penguin stands just 25 cm tall and weighs a little over 1 kilogram. The plumage is slate-blue with a bright white belly. Juveniles are indistinguishable from adults. Both sexes are alike, although the male is a little heavier and usually has a larger bill. There are several distinct races of blue penguins and some argue that they should be split up into sub-species. Perhaps the most distinct is the "white-flippered" penguin of Canterbury, however genetic tests have shown it not to be as distinct as its plumage would suggest. penguin.net.nz/species/blue/index.html

Nanopinguine | Nanopenguins

Here, we report a new biophotonic nanostructure in the non-iridescent blue feather barbs of blue penguins (Eudyptula minor) composed of parallel β-keratin nanofibres organized into densely packed bundles. Synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering and two-dimensional Fourier analysis of electron micrographs of the barb nanostructure revealed short-range order in the organization of fibres at the appropriate size scale needed to produce the observed colour by coherent scattering. These two-dimensional quasi-ordered penguin nanostructures are convergent with similar arrays of parallel collagen fibres in avian and mammalian skin, but constitute a novel morphology for feathers. The identification of a new class of β-keratin nanostructures adds significantly to the known mechanisms of colour production in birds and suggests additional complexity in their self-assembly.

Fish as Fish can | Frische Fische

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Penguin

  *****

" ...  A soft liquid joy flowed through the words where the soft long vowels hurtled noiselessly and fell away, lapping and flowing back and ever shaking the white bells of their waves in mute chime and mute peal, and soft low swooning cry; and he felt that the augury he had sought in the wheeling darting birds and in the pale space of sky above him had come forth from his heart like a bird from a turret, quietly and swiftly.

Symbol of departure or of loneliness? The verses crooned in the ear of his memory composed slowly before his remembering eyes the scene of the hall on the night of the opening of the national theatre. He was alone at the side of the balcony, looking out of jaded eyes at the culture of Dublin in the stalls and at the tawdry scene-cloths and human dolls framed by the garish lamps of the stage. ... Bergmann, der Pinguin | Colder Locations

It is a common misconception that all penguins live in icy climates. While many of them do, it isn’t something that is necessary in order for them to survive. You will notice that those living in the colder locations though are fatter. They have several layers of feathers that keep them very warm in such an environment. That way they can survive there without being negatively impacted by the cold water or the very low temperatures. penguins-world.com/penguin-distribution.html

On May 1, 1886, Chicago unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists, and ordinary workers combined to make the city the center of the national movement for an eight-hour day. Between April 25 and May 4, workers attended scores of meetings and paraded through the streets at least 19 times. On Saturday, May 1, 35,000 workers walked off their jobs. Tens of thousands more, both skilled and unskilled, joined them on May 3 and 4. Crowds traveled from workplace to workplace urging fellow workers to strike. … Inspired by the American movement for a shorter workday, socialists and unionists around the world began celebrating May 1, or "May Day", as an international workers' holiday. www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/571.html
