Penguins are said to populate only a very limited part of our planet. If you look out for penguins, however, you will start to discover them in the most common places. In the average European city. In your daily life. In your household. Everywhere.

PENGUIN - TALKATIVE

Scientists think that emperor penguins produces a call that has two different "voices" by utilizing both sides of the syrinx, or the vocal organ of the penguin. Like songbirds, the penguins' vocalization sound unique and rich in tone, frequency and beat, but to human ears the penguin "voice" may sound thin. Studies done on Emperor penguins show that they will call and respond to voices that are familiar to them, specifically their mates' voice and the voice of their offspring.

Pinguin-Teams | Penguin Team Work

The Head Penguin said: "The colony needs a team of birds to guide it through this difficult period. I cannot do the job alone. I believe the five of us are the best team for the task ahead." Alice nodded ever so slightly. Buddy looked confused. Fred was surprised that he, a more junior penguin, was being included. But the Professor was the first to speak. "Why do you make the assumption that the five of us can succeed?" he asked.

Molting is an essential function, as feathers wear out during the year. Feathers become worn when penguins rub against each other, come in contact with the ground and water, and regularly preen (clean, rearrange, and oil) their feathers. Sparks and Soper, 1987

The new feather grows under the old one, pushing it out. The old feather does not fall out until the new one is completely in place. The molt is patchy and can give individual penguins a scruffy look. del Hoyo, et al., 1992

Goldsmith & the Penguin - Part 2 | Teil 2

(…) This whole tribe have all above the knee hid within the belly; and nothing appears but two short legs, or feet, as some would call them, that seem stuck under the rump, and upon which the animal is very awkwardly supported. They seem, when sitting or attempting to walk, like a dog that has been taught to sit up or to move a minuet. Their short legs drive the body in progression from side to side; and were they not assisted by their wings, they could scarcely move faster than a tortoise.

This awkward position of the legs, which so unqualifies them for living upon land, adapts them admirably for a residence in water. In that, the legs placed behind the moving body, pushes it forward with greater velocity; and these birds, like Indian canoes, are the swiftest in the water, by having their paddles in the rear.

The Penguin kind are but ill fitted for flight, and still less for walking. Every body must have seen the awkward manner in which a duck, either wild or tame, attempts to change place; they must recollect with what softness and ease a gull or a kite waves its pinions, and with what a coil and flutter the duck attempts to move them; how many strokes it is obliged to give; in order to gather a little air; and even when it is thus raised; how soon it is fatigued with the force of its exertions, and obliged to take rest again. But the duck is not, in its natural state, half so unwieldy an animal as the whole tribe of the penguin kind.

Their wings are much shorter, more scantily furnished with quills, and the whole pinion placed too forward to be usefully employed. For this reason, the largest of the penguin kind, that have a thick, heavy body to raise, cannot fly at all. Their wings serve them rather as paddles to help them forward, when they attempt to move swiftly; and in a manner walk along the surface of the water. Even the smaller kinds seldom fly by choice; they flutter their wings with the swiftest efforts without making way; and though they have but a small weight of body to sustain, yet they seldom venture to quit the water where they are provided with food and protection.

As the wings of the penguin tribe are unfitted for flight, their legs are still more awkwardly adapted for walking. …. to be continued

Getting Cold Feet | Frostbeulenfrei

Avoiding frostbites - The penguins’ secret to keeping their feet frostbite-free has to do with a combination of anatomical and physiological adaptations to cold. Anatomically, their feet and lower legs consist mainly of tendons, bone, and a thick layer of skin. The muscles that control the movement of the feet are found higher up on the leg, attached to bones lying beneath warm fat and feathers. This warmth is vital for the muscles to function and move the feet in the cold. In extremely cold conditions, penguins may stand on their heels, using their tails to balance in a resting position, which allows them to curl their toes up off the frozen ground. britannica.com

The polar bears had been up to their nasty tricks again, and the North Pole penguins had had enough. They were off to the South Pole, to make their home where no polar bears could bully them. Penguin Small watched his friends plop into the ocean and swim away. "Come on!" they shouted. "You can do it!" But Penguin Small wouldn't. He couldn't. He was terrified of water. He always had been. In "Penguin Small" by Mick Inkpen

Richtig, am Nordpol gibt es keine Pinguine.

Penguin Origin | Pinguinentstehung

Charles Robert Darwin (1809–1882), "Origin of Species", 10. On the Sudden Appearance of Whole Groups of Allied Species:

I may here recall a remark formerly made, namely, that it might require a long succession of ages to adapt an organism to some new and peculiar line of life, for instance, to fly through the air; and consequently that the transitional forms would often long remain confined to some one region; but that, when this adaptation had once been effected, and a few species had thus acquired a great advantage over other organisms, a comparatively short time would be necessary to produce many divergent forms, which would spread rapidly and widely, throughout the world. Professor Pictet, in his excellent review of this work, in commenting on early transitional forms, and taking birds as an illustration, cannot see how the successive modifications of the anterior limbs of a supposed prototype could possibly have been of any advantage. But look at the penguins of the Southern Ocean; have not these birds their front limbs in this precise intermediate state of “neither true arms nor true wings”? Yet these birds hold their place victoriously in the battle for life; for they exist in infinite numbers and of many kinds.

Penguins Flippers as a Defensive Weapon - The flippers of the penguin are hard and rigid. These are used as weapons to defend themselves from their predators. The penguin flippers are used as a weapon in penguin fights also. The penguins are aggressive birds when they guard their nests. They use their flippers to hit the predator. They hit the predator rapidly with their flippers from both sides to defend themselves. The strikes of the flippers are painful, which causes the predators to move back. Another defensive weapon of the penguins is their bill that is used to bite their enemies. buzzle.com/articles

Can I keep a penguin as a pet? - Over the years we have often been asked about the possibility of keeping penguins as pets. We are no experts, but we have talked to several. They all are completely against the idea.

First off, all species of penguin are protected so that you could only (legally) get a penguin from a Zoo that had bred it.

Secondly, you would need a constant and reliable supply of fresh frozen fish as well as appropriate vitamin supplements, you would also need to know a vet who was familiar with penguins and the many diseases they are prone to when kept in captivity.

Thirdly, you would need to be able to feed the birds every day so you couldn't take any more vacations! You can't just put a penguin into kennels!

Fourthly, you would need to build a suitable enclosure to keep the bird - remember different species have very different environmental requirements (temperature, vegetation etc.). For example, there are no species of penguin that could live outside year round in say Chicago with its wide temperature variations. Plus all species of penguins require access to a large, deep and clean pool of water – preferably salt water.

Fifthly, penguins tend to live in large colonies - anything less than say 20 birds would not be sufficient. So you would need a very healthy income. Zoos here reckon it costs around 400 pounds (700 US$) per year just to keep a penguin in fish!

Finally, why would you want to keep penguins for yourself anyway? They are much better left in the wild or in well looked after breeding colonies in Zoos and Aquaria. Remember that nearly all species are endangered to some extent or another. We would strongly discourage anyone from trying to keep a penguin as a pet - except the cuddly toy variety! answers.google.com
