Along with the emperor, the Adelie is the only other truly Antarctic penguin. It breeds further south than any penguin. (…) Males are first to return to the breeding grounds, sometimes crossing as much as 60 miles of fast-ice to reach them. The females follow, to join a known mate, but the pair-bond is less strong than in other Pygoscelids: the harsh requirements of the short season allow for no delay. The imperative is to begin courtship and the male will bond quickly with an available female rather than delay in waiting for last year's mate. Courtship is brief, with much flipper waving and guttural gossip. The nest is composed of small pebbles in a shallow depression, gathered by stealth and thievery, and jealously guarded because it is vital that the eggs are raised above the level of melt water.
